The Whisky Guild Selection No. 2:
Glen Elgin 1991, 12 year old Single Speyside Malt Whisky - 61.9% abv
Tasting notes by Michael: I first really noticed Glen Elgin when Jim McEwan of Bowmore/Bruichladdich fame mentioned it as one of his Desert Island Drams. Hard to get we sought out 5 samples and then looked at them with other Speyside greats such as MacAllan. This sample just jumped out at us, quite stunning and very well balanced, in fact exceptionally so. Only 82 numbered bottles.
Colour: Old Gold. Great legs down the glass.
Nose: Sweet with herb notes, not over sherried, great balance, nutty.
Taste: Initially dry with some spirit (61.1%!) however on dilution it opens up fully with malt and Swiss chocolate character a great combination, smooth and oily.
Finish: Surprisingly long, quite chewy and superb oil.
