Glossary of Whisky Terms
ABV% Percentage of contents that is alcohol. Eg. 1 litre @ 40% = 400ml actual alcohol.
AGE As stated on a label applies to the youngest whisky in the bottle. By law, whisky must be at least 3 years old.
BLEND A whisky which is a mixture of grain and malt whiskies. Devised to appeal to a wide range of tastes. A ‘blended malt’ is a combination of only single malts.
CASK Various sizes, always oak usually ex bourbon or ex sherry. Commonly 200 to 500 litres.
CASK STRENGTH New whisky is filled into casks at 63.5-75% (approx). Also refers to whisky which has been bottled straight from the cask with no further dilution.
OAK The wood from which casks are made. By law Scotch & Irish whisky must be aged in Oak.
SINGLE CASK Refers to the bottling of a whisky from a sole cask.
SINGLE MALT A whisky derived from malted barley, and which is the product of a single distillery.
UN-CHILLFILTERED The spirit has not been filtered at a low temperature to remove the clouding which can occur if whisky gets very cold. Some would argue that chillfiltering also filters out some of the character.
UN-COLOURED No colour (in the form of spirit caramel) has been added to ensure continuity of colour. Natural format.
WHISKY A spirit obtained by distillation from a mash of cereal grains, yeast and water.
