Distilled at the Edradour distillery from heavily peated barley, this single sherry cask is a brooding dram, offering intense notes of espresso coffee, leather and macerated plums on the nose to start. Roasted and toasted nutty aromas give way to a distant peat smoke - earthy farmyard aromas and freshly varnished wood. The palate carries over these scents, with a dense mouthfeel that is surprisingly soft given the high strength, offering a tannic grip and again an intense dark chocolate / espresso finish. The peat smoke of Edradour's Ballechin is wonderfully funky, and the combination of sherry and smoke here is quite exceptional.
