The Benrinnes distillery is one of the hidden gems of Speyside, and one of the house favourites here at Whisky Galore. This is the oldest Benrinnes we have seen by almost a decade, having been matured for 40 years in a single cask.
The distillery operated a very odd distillation regime until 2007 whereby part of the distillate would be redistilled, before condensing in cold wormtubs. With all that copper contact Benrinnes tends to be heavy bodied and complex, perfectly suited to long maturation.
On the nose find dried pineapple, furniture wax, and fresh herbal aromas. The palate is full, and has a distinctly waxy and oily texture, mouthcoating and carrying lots of fresh fruit such as orange, papaya and guava. The finish is long, fruity and satisfyingly drying.
