Laphroaig 'Bessie's Fable from Whisky Galore' 11 years old 61.2%
We are proud to offer our latest single cask Whisky Galore exclusive, selected from the Laphroaig distillery and produced in collaboration with independent bottlers Elixir Distillers. Matured for 11 years in an ex-Hogshead cask, we were captivated by this Laphroaig from when our sample first arrived to the bottles finally reaching our shores in time for Christmas.
This dram begins with a salty, savoury start: smoky bacon crisps, beef oxo cubes and bubbling hot cheesymite mousetraps. Laphroaig's signature dirty and medicinal character comes through with notes of old fashioned cough drops, diesel soaked tar and carbolic soap. The peat smoulders throughout, with a tone of burning of white sage and dukkah. Luscious and oily even at its high natural strength, the finish was described by Michael as tasting like "smoky mint chocolate".
We hope you enjoy this special dram, it is named in honour of Bessie Williamson - you can read her story below.

Bessie Williamson:
Whisky Hero
This special release was named in honour of Bessie Williamson, the legendary manager and owner of Laphroaig from 1954 to 1971. Bessie's time at the distillery began as a receptionist and typist in the early 1930's, quickly becoming the right-hand woman of then distillery owner Ian Hunter.
In the 1940's, due to Ian's poor health, the running of the distillery was lead entirely by Bessie, and by 1954 when Ian passed away, Laphroaig was handed over to Bessie, becoming the first Scotch whisky distillery to be owned and run by a woman in the 20th century.
Under her leadership, Laphroaig's future was secured, and her vision saw the distillery become one of the most iconic and beloved in all of Scotch.
Slàinte Bessie!
