Creating a unique New Zealand whisky release is a most enjoyable activity for the Whisky Galore team, one that really stimulates the sharper end of our whisky enthusiasm. When the opportunity arises, whether it’s for a special event, an exclusive shop release, or a New Zealand wide release, the process begins with an idea and results in a very special one-of-a-kind whisky.
The journey starts with selecting the right distilleries and independent bottlers to collaborate with. Samples from a variety of cask types are requested, each offering a different flavour profile, often our suppliers will pop in a rogue outlier to pique our curiosity. These samples are reviewed by a small, knowledgeable team led by Michael, who carefully evaluates each whisky for its quality, complexity, and uniqueness. The goal is to find a whisky that not only meets our standards but will also be something New Zealanders are going to love, Kiwi’s are a curious bunch which makes our selection process all the more enjoyable. Usually, an outstanding whisky is exactly that, it stands out right from the moment we first put our nose to it, putting it’s hand up loud and clear.
Once a selection is made, the imports team works closely with the distillery or independent bottler to finalise the label design and packaging before the whisky is bottled and labelled in Scotland.
After what can be up to a year in the making, the whisky is shipped and makes it way to it’s new home in New Zealand. It’s always an exciting day for the Whisky Galore team when the final product arrives and we can pop the cork!
